The Walkmen

I saw The Walkmen a couple of years ago at the 9:30 Club and it was a pretty great show. Before their bass cut out. But that's beyond the point. Hamilton's vocals are great. And Matt, well, Matt may just be the greatest drummer alive.

top ten of 2008 + my latest obsession (of which they are legion)

Before we get started, you fuckers best be downloading this shit. I don't do this for my health, yknow? Now that that's out of the way...

I dig this. The album is gorgeous. All lush and discordant, it's pretty wild. People have been complaining about the guy's voice, which I totally get. But I think it's great and I think it works so well with these songs. I told someone that Vampire Weekend had made the most cohesive and consistent album this year. I quite love this album much much more.

my top ten of 2008

10. EAGLE NEBULA - COSMIC HEADPHONES

9. COOL KIDS - BAKE SALE

8. VAMPIRE WEEKEND - S/T

7. JON BRION - SYNECDOCHE, NY

6. ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - WATER CURSES EP

5. ASHER ROTH - THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT VOL. 1

4. PORTISHEAD - THIRD

3. GUILTY SIMPSON - ODE TO THE GHETTO

2. PARENTHETICAL GIRLS - ENTANGLEMENTS

AND NUMBER ONE IS.......

1. EMMY THE MOTHERFUCKIN GREAT!!!!!!!!!

How can I not love a girl wearing a Municipal Waste shirt (regardless how much they suck)? Okay, so technically her album comes out next year and technically she released her 'First Love EP' this year (which is awesome), but I've downloaded enough songs to constitute an album and a half, and lemme tell you, every single song is amazing. Album, EP...she is absolutely my most favorite thing about music this year.

Beards 0wn indie folk.

I have no idea who this is. I downloaded a song from a mixtape last night and immediately scoured Hype Machine for every single I could find. Well, maybe not every single one. It's 3:45 and I'm extremely lazy right now. The project is called Vandaveer by a guy named Mark Charles. Upon just checking out his website, he's from Washington DC. How's about them apples? He's playing at IOTA Dec 12. I must find money for this to make up for missing Bowerbirds (twice) and Bon Iver.

Woolgathering

The Street Is Full Of Creeps

Bowerbirds are from North Carolina, I believe. This guy's amazing with a guitar, and I love how good this sounds in a supermarket.

Bowerbirds - Bur Oak

Bonus: my favorite Dodos song 'Ashley.'

Dodos - Ashley

Happy Thanksgiving.

What the hell is a Sewerscape? I don't know what they are either. Something akin to landscapes, possibly. Soundscapes. I DO know that I made one. Today, on my computer in about an hour and a half. And I actually like it quite a bit. So much in fact I'm willing to share it. Look, I'm not gonna pretend I'm holding platinum status hits or anything, but I dig it. Oh yeah, Happy Genocide Day. Eat all you can. All songs made by me. And I promise, your mixes ARE coming.

Open Up Yr Heart!

So peep this shit. YOUR MIXES ARE DONE. That's right. With the exception of Josh, but that's only because I have to go back and make it the most bizarre, disturbed mix ever. I'm making cover art for them tonight, uploading them tonight, so they should all be up tomorrow (Wed). Since I have no job, expect tons more videos, a few more mixes, and a branching out of sorts to include my fetish for film trailers.

Now onto the good stuff:

GENEVA JACUZZI - LOVE CABOOSE

I have no idea who Geneva Jacuzzi is, but by goddamn this video is the most genius thing I've seen in a long time. It seems to me there's been this sort of resurgence of eighties sensibilities, not only in music but in clothes and music videos as well. The best example is Snoop Dogg's 'Sexual Seduction.' I didn't really like this song too much to start, but it grew on me. Behold, greatness.

VIVIAN GIRLS - WILD EYES

I love the Vivian Girls too much to say. I'm not good at describing things, but I guess this is something akin to garage rock. Moreso than any of the bands that came out of the shameful 'THE" period of band naming. Simplicity is great and they are champions of the simplistic. Also, vocal harmonies, girls with red hair, tattoos, chubby drummers -- it's like my soulmate split into three parts.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - BROTHER SPORT

Do I really have to say anything about this? Animal Collective + new songs = Gorgeous. Panda Bear stated Merriweather Post Pavillion is the best recorded album of their career. This coming from the man who championed elitist assholes Pitchfork to capture their #1 album of 2007 -- it HAS to be good. I think MPP will be the culmination of everything they've been trying to do, not just a progression of the last album.

Jon Brion.

First of all: sorry shit's taking forever.
ALL MIXES WILL BE UP IN THE NEXT FOUR DAYS.
FOR REAL THIS TIME.

Now that we're done with that, let's speak about Jon Brion. Chances are if you're one of my friends you already know who he is. Or you know, but you don't. He's a film composer, the twin Elliott Smith never had (both vocally and musically), and one of the most underrated unknown musicians working today. He has a weekly live show at Largo in Los Angeles where he regularly crafts songs on the spot. He has composed music for Eternal Sunshine, Punch Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees, Magnolia, and Synecdoche New York. He produced Fiona Apple's When The Pawn, the unreleased (far superior) version of her Extraordinary Machine album, and produced all of Aimee Mann's songs for the Magnolia soundtrack. He is probably my favorite musician living today (eclipsed only by Bjork), mostly because of how consumed by music he is.

Watch him play "I Fall In Love Too Easily." Most piano players I've become accustomed to usually sit still, but the music practically courses from Jon's soul, through his body, and out his fingers. He couldn't sit still if you tied him down. The man has too much music to get out.

Jon Brion - I Fall In Love Too Easily

It's a shame he doesn't have a record deal of his own, or that he hasn't released an album since 2001's Meaningless. Here's a couple more videos. The first is Jon Brion impersonating Tom Waits covering Radiohead's 'Creep.' The second is Jon Brion's video for "Knock Yourself Out". Enjoy!

Good news!

I got all your mixes back. Which is good cos they're pretty awesome if I do say so. So this weekend they'll all be up. 3-5.

Also, apparently, this is how I listen to music.

Who knew?

I said something about no one rocking it as hard as Edan. Eff that.

Like Pussy Galore, but with videos.

I had a little incident with my iTunes wherein I lost all the playlists I'd made for you. More mixes are coming. I promise. To make up for it I overwhelm you with awesome Youtube videos.

Beach House - Gila

I've known of Beach House for some time, but never sampled the goods. They're from Baltimore and my first impression was "Oh, the Fiery Furnaces." They're like the Fiery Furnaces if they reigned in their experiments, were actually good, and were fronted by Cat Power. That being said, this is an awesome video and a beautiful song.

Bon Iver - Wolves (Act I + II)

This video makes me want to move to North Carolina and live in the wilderness writing sweetly soft acoustic songs for warmth. Also, I love the sound of crackling firewood.

Peter Bjorn & John - Objects Of My Affection

Remember that screensaver from way back when? The one with the balls and the thing falling through the balls lazily and...oh, fuck. You'll know as soon as you see it. This is a great song.

Partyline - Crash

I can't find this fucking band anywhere, but I absolutely love this song. I used to despise this kind of stuff, but I think a combination of a year immersed in girltalk!, Diplo, Justice, and Uffie has softened me to all things dance/pop. Besides that, this amateur video is awesome and I love the kid's off-kilter vocals. YACHT gets signed to DFA and this is honestly better than anything they've ever done. BUT WHO THE FUCK SINGS THIS SONG? PARTYLINE DOES NOT EXIST.

Panther - You Don't Want Yr Nails Done

I was turned onto Panther by a friend of mine from Boston some years ago when it still sounded like this. He has since moved to include a full band (or at the very least another guitarist and a live drummer). His new stuff from his album 14kt gold is pretty good, but this is still and will always be the version of Panther I want/ed to hear.

Chemical Brothers w/ The Flaming Lips - The Golden Path

You'll recognize the office building in the first few shots from a Ginuwine video, Grey's Anatomy, Constantine, and just about any other film made in Los Angeles that requires a hospital. Location scouts are cheap and creatively restricted that way. Anywho, Chris Milk (who made the awesome Gnarls Barkley video for "Whose Gonna Save My Soul?") directed this and I don't know how you can feel shitty after watching this video. This is the one song that never loses any potency; it always makes me smile.

EDAN - Fumbling Over Rhymes (live)

For all the Jewish kids in the back, YOU TOO CAN BE THE DOPEST RAPPER/DJ WITH A JEW FRO IN THE COUNTRY. This is Edan, the Humble Magnificent, beat-juggling with one hand and destroying the alphabet with lyrics of steel. Tacky writing? Yes. But when was the last time you saw a Jew rock it like this?

Britney Spears - Hit Me Baby, One More Time (cover)

Last but not least, I couldn't resist. This is one for the ages.

Emmy the Great.

Emmy the Great is the goddamn goods. I've fallen head over friggin heels. Look for her on pretty much every mix I ever make from now on. I'll put those up when I stop being uber-lazy.

Emo relapse.

I keep floating down the river but the ocean never comes
Since the operation I heard you're breathing just for one
Now everything is imaginary, especially what you love
You left another message, said it's done
It's done

When I hear beautiful music it's always from another time
Old friends I never visit, I remember what they're like
Standing on a doorstep full of nervous butterflies
Waiting to be asked to come inside
Just come inside

But I keep going out
I can't sleep next to a stranger when I'm coming down
It's 8 a.m., my heart is beating too loud
Too loud
Don't be so amazing or I'll miss you too much
I felt something that I had never touched
Everything gets smaller now the further that I go
Towards the mouth and the reunion of the known and the unknown
Consider yourself lucky if you think of it as home
You can move mountains with your misery if you don't
If you don't

It comes to me in fragments, even those still split in two
Under the leaves of that old lime tree I stood examining the fruit
Some were ripe and some were rotten, I felt naseous with the truth
There will never be a time more opportune

So I just won't be late
The window closes, shocks roll over in a tidal wave
And all the color drains out of the frame
So pleased with a daydream that now living is no good
I took off my shoes and walked into the woods
I felt lost and found with every step I took

TrailerMania.

As anyone with eyes or ears knows, I love movies. I love them so much in fact I remember almost every bit of information I possibly can about every aspect of the production. I'm kind of an encyclopedia that way. So when I'm excited about a movie and expectations are big I usually go all out in my little immersions. This year that belongs to two films: Synecdoche NY and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.

I've read Synecdoche NY twice now. People will hate this flick, and that'll mostly be because it frustrates them. It really wants to be the masterpiece it ultimately is, but Charlie Kaufman's not interested in playing anything safe. Just when you get used to his first weird twist, he throws another, and another, and another. It's not as confusing as they're making it out to be, but it is kind of an overload at first. Characters loop back portraying other characters all the while floating in and out of character. It's extremely surreal but polarizing on paper. I am Caden Cotard. This is the story of my life. Especially if you take the meaning of the word 'synecdoche'' literally.

David Fincher is my favorite director so to see him go from Se7en and Fight Club to Zodiac and something like The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button given his roots working for Industrial Light & Magic. Panic Room wasn't the greatest movie, but it was cool and suspenseful mostly due to excellent directing. Fincher knows how to make a movie. He's OCD over details, and that's exactly what I love about him as a director.

So here for you, these are my two favorite trailers so far this year.

Synecdoche NY

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Note: To really get the most of the Benjamin Button trailer, I cannot stress enough checking out the 480p version @ Apple Trailers.

mix02: Nathalie.

So in actuality the first mix is the second mix and the second the first, because this whole thing started after a few people coaxed me into putting my mixes online. Even though I think they suck. So to be a jerk and embarrass the three or four people who actually read and listen to this, behold your own embarrassment. Be grateful I didn't choose shocking or embarrassing pictures.

In all modesty, and to be absolutely resolutely fair the first mix Sad Song Street, which I kind of hope becomes a regular ongoing years and years kinda thing if only to have something to do -- to be fair, the first mix ever made for this was Nathalie's mix. Here it is if you haven't heard it cos I actually like this one quite a bit.

1. Death Cab For Cutie - You Can Do Better Than Me
2. Death Cab For Cutie - Grapevine Fires

mix01: "Is Your Car Going To Be Okay?"

I fell in love with this new Antony & the Johnsons song, "Shake That Devil." It really pushes the entire Nina Simone comparison to new heights. It's everything Nina would've done, yknow, if she were a six-foot husky white man.

I tried to keep it pretty upbeat but I'm a sap, what can I say. All my mixes eventually veer into sad music territory. Thankfully, it's reserved for the last two or three tracks. Also, I like short mixes.

1. Antony and the Johnsons - Shake That Devil
2. The Ditty Bops - Walk Or Ride
3 Elvis Costello - (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
4. Radiohead - Bangers & Mash
5. Blonde Redhead - Spring And Summer By Fall
6. Mountain Goats - Autoclave
7. Jon Brion - Barry States His Case
8. Richard Swift - Sad Song St.
9. Feist - Honey Honey
10. Bright Eyes - Smoke Without Fire
